Staff and Volunteers 'in The Doghouse'
At the end of 2015, the Stubbington Ark received a grant from Support Adoption For Pets to carry out much needed refurbishments to one of the blocks of dog kennels.
The grant of almost £9000 has allowed the Stubbington Ark to refurbish 19 dog kennels with new flooring, lighting and major repairs to the building.
To launch the official opening of the newly renovated kennels, the staff and volunteers of the RSPCA Solent Branch spent twenty-four hours in a dog kennel to raise funds and awareness of the animals in their care.
Staff took it in turns to spend an hour in the kennel during the day, surprising visitors with the sight, before all fourteen participants prepared their kennels with sleeping bags and pillows ready to spend the remaining twelve hours in their temporary accommodation.
Rachel Hall, Branch Manager commented “It was a very long night and I don’t think anyone got much sleep, the cold hard concrete floors were uncomfortable and as you cannot see anybody in the other kennels it felt very lonely.
“The RSPCA Solent Branch is financially independent; we rely on the support of the local community to stay operational. We have been overwhelmed by the amount of support we have received from the event, we have already raised over £1000 for the animals in our care and donations are still coming in.
“Spending the night in the kennels made us all realise what these animals go through every day. While we make their stay with us as comfortable as possible, with bedding, enrichment toys and regular walks, kennels are very lonely places. We hope that our experience encourages people to consider adopting from us first when looking for a new pet.”
The Stubbington Ark currently have a range of animals available for adoption, including Seb; a Jack Russell who has been at the Ark since November 2015 and is desperately looking for a forever home.
