For many years now The Stubbington Ark has liaised closely with Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

We are pleased that we have been able to provide this very worthy cause with a number of puppies and young dogs who have become successful Hearing Dogs.

New recruits live with a volunteer socialiser for many months learning basic obedience and manners. They then commence their soundwork training during which time they learn to respond to sounds like the alarm clock, smoke alarm, doorbell, telephone and cooker timer.  Instead of barking, the dogs alert the deaf person by touch, using a paw to gain attention and then leading them back to the sound source.  For sounds such as the smoke alarm and fire bell, the dogs alert then lie down to indicate danger.

Successful candidates are then placed with their recipients and help them change their lives. As well as practical assistance, hearing dogs provide greater independence, confidence and security.  Many recipients say their hearing dog has given them the confidence to try things they wouldn’t have dreamt of attempting before.

Flint and Mike Sullivan

We are particularly proud of Flint who was chosen by HDDP to be featured with Mike on the new leaflets when they launched their new look at Crufts 2002. She was already 2.5 years old when she was brought into the Stubbington Ark and subsequently selected for training.
From rescue dog to cover girl - Flint is a real success story.

Bobs

Bobs was only about 4 months old when he was found by the Southampton Dog Warden wandering the streets on his own. As he was never claimed, Bobs was brought into the Stubbington Ark for rehoming.
We realised he was a confident little dog who had lots of potential as a Hearing Dog. HDDP agreed with us and he was selected for training.
Bobs became the Hearing Dog of the Month in May 2001 and was placed with a recipient in Scotland after his training was completed.

Pippa

Pippa was brought into the Stubbington Ark in 2003. She was given her name because her Hearing Dogs training was sponsored by Phillipa Forrester of the BBC. Pippa and Phillipa met at Crufts 2003 where they both took part in the Hearing Dogs demo.

Pippa was placed with a young lady in her twenties and accompanies her on the bus, the train and to the pub.

Ruby

Ruby was just 14 weeks old when she was handed into us at the Stubbington Ark, along with her parents and brothers and sisters.

As the puppies got older, we realised that Ruby was just the sort of outgoing, cheeky character that Hearing Dogs look for. HDDP agreed with us and Ruby has started her training. She was voted New Recruit of the Month in June 2004.

Beanbag

Beanbag came into us as a bouncy puppy in 2000. He was such an intelligent, inquisitive and friendly pup, that we thought he would make a good working dog. As we felt he was probably too big to be a hearing dog, we contacted Canine Partners for Independence who took him in for training. We were very proud when Beanbag passed with flying colours and went on to become a very helpful dog
